November 13, 2010

The first full day has been just that – full.  We gathered by 1’s and 2’s on the gorgeous and peaceful porch before 8am.  Everyone had appreciated the evenings rest.  Our first Concordia meal met the Doña Trini standard:  eggs with chilis, plaintains, beans, and tortillas, and watermelon.  Our hostesses are always so gracious and generous.  They lovingly model a life of cheerful service.

We shared a worship time in the room outside the dorms.  This blended group – different homes, different experiences – will go through lots of changes over the next days together.  The shared meals and worship times will keep us centered.

As the Lutherans gathered for their General Assembly, we loaded up to visit the Catholic University.  The story of Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter, is central both to El Salvador today and to our work with Puente Azul.  Puente Azul is a community of displaced persons collected there because of and just after the civil war.  The Catholic University massacre was the beginning of the end of that war.

We spent a lot of time there and we saved the Romero visit for after lunch.  Instead, Marco, Bill, Dale, and I were led by Doña Trini on a shopping trip.  We had promised Kiké that we’d provide a 100 cup coffee urn for his homeless meal ministry.  We found one, and that trip was one more adventure.

We’re back on the Concordia porch reading, emailing, and writing, as we wait for Kiké to arrive.  We’ll cook a meal for 100 and head toward downtown San Salvador to deliver it.  What a day!
