November 8 & 9, 2007

The day began rather smoothly, considering the fact that we were up at 4am so as to get to the airport in time for our 6am flight out of Raleigh/Durham airport.

We apent the night in a motel in Durham so as not to have to get up even earlier to drive from Wilmington.   It was very exciting to finally be on our way after so many months of preparation.  airport check-in eith E-ticketing went wee, but security took a bit longer than expected and there were a few tense moments at the end.  The line was still long and we didn't have long until boarding.

In the end we mae it just in time and settled into our seats.  Some slept, some talked, some read.  The flight was smooth and we landed right on time in Houston.

Our flight to San Salvador departed from the same gate at which we arrived.  Most of us scattered to get a quick bit of breakfast and a cup of coffee.  The next thing I knew someone rushed up to our table and said to come quickly, they're not going to let Lance get on the plane - and indeed they did not!!  The corner of his passport had separated from the inside sheets.  No amount of persuasion convinced them to let him get on.  With sinking hearts we watched him leave for the passport office in downtown Houston to try to get a new passport and catch the 5:45 flight.

Our flight was great and in three hours we were flying in over the lush, green mountains and valleys of El Salvador.  What a beautiful country.  Customs went well and soon we were standing guard over all oof our luggage while Marco rented two vans.  The airport is about 45 minutes from San Salvador.  After loading ourselves and all of our bags we set off on the first of many wild rides.  Traffic in San Salvador defied description!  Thousands and thousands and thousands of cars, buses, trucks, scooters, and vans - all driving at breakneck speeds on roads that are inadequate for the amount of traffic - and without rules!

We arrived safely - albeit somewhat petrified - at the Concordia Lutheran Guest House where we were warmly welcomed by Dona Trini and her daughters and grandchildren.  We spent the afternoon settling into our rooms, buying some supplies, and wondering if Lance would come in this evening.
